    Presenter: Julian Fairfield
  • Part B - The Worlds of the Customer: The Double Games of Requisite Strategy
    Presenter: Ken Craddock

Part A - Morning Session (8:00 - 11:30 am)

Strategy Seen Through the Lens of "Levels of Capability"
Session Leader: Julian Fairfield

Overarching Concept:

Viewing strategy through the lens of capability adds two powerful insights into strategic thinking:
  • First strategy can be seen to be operative and relevant level by level.
  • Second the chances of strategic delivery and implementation are significantly improved by understanding strategic initiatives as a "levels shift".

Session Purpose and Learning Objectives:

To help Managers and consultants see how "levels of capability" are directly related to the nature and implementation of strategy.

This will lead to more powerful strategies and more certain implementation.

Session Features and Format:

The format will be a mix of presentation, break out sessions and open free ranging discussion.

Who Should Attend:

Anyone who is intensely interested in strategy formulation and implementation.

Lunch  (11:30 am - 12:30 pm)

Part B - Afternoon Session (12:30 - 4:00 pm)

The Worlds of the Customer: The Double Games of Requisite Strategy
Session Leader: Ken Craddock

Stratified Systems Theory places a capable individual in each role at each stratum of the organization. But this is not enough.

The customer has expectations for the goods and services offered by the organization and they are always changing. The firm has three types of customers: today, tomorrow, and the far-future customer.

  • How does the firm link to today’s customers so they become tomorrow’s customers?
  • How does the firm identify when the world of the customer will be transformed?
  • How does the firm identify the far-future customers and their expectations?

Mastering the finite and infinite games, the elements of the internal structure and the external manifestation of that structure, and anticipating the worlds of the customer are the keys to controlling your destiny and dominating the competitive landscape.

Only a handful of companies presently aspire to these concepts -- GE, Microsoft, Anheuser-Busch, Amazon, Citibank, Chase, Philip Morris, and Toyota.

They use Global Organization design concepts as a starting point, not a goal, and grow the top line at double-digit rates. Several so dominate their industries today they are forced to go global because they threaten to cross the anti-trust barrier (50% market share).

Julian Fairfield

Julian Fairfield, the author of Levels of Excellence, has had a varied career.

Initially spending six years in manufacturing in the USA, he moved on to join McKinsey and later the Boston Consulting Group. While with McKinsey in Australia he was made aware of Elliott's work and was responsible to Sir Roderick Carnegie for initial implementation and development of RO at CRA.

Moving to Japan he studied Japanese management practices after which he returned to Australia with a Japanese wife and family. In Australia, he founded Bach Consulting, a practice that specialised in Organization and Strategy work for large corporate and government clients.

Reducing his consulting activity, he now also owns and operates two import businesses and is writing a book on Human Behavioural Evolution.

Ken Craddock

Ken Craddock, developed the online Annotated Bibliography on Jaques’ organization theory.

In searching the literature, Ken became aware that the common concepts of strategy in business are crippled by the lack of knowledge of Jaques’ structural work.

With such knowledge and the capability it provides, whole new strategic worlds open up.
